Manfred Weber is the party and parliamentary group leader of the European People's Party (EPP) and is standing as the CSU's lead candidate in the 2024 European elections. In the following, he explains why he believes Europe is a community of destiny and what the most important task will be.
Manfred Weber, top candidate of the CSU
one: The past legislative period was characterised by unforeseeable shocks such as the pandemic and Russia's war against Ukraine. Inflation, strained supply chains and panic buying also posed major challenges for the retail sector. What are your party's priorities for the coming years in the area of food trade?
Manfred Weber: I would like to put it in a bigger picture: The world has become more uncertain. This makes it all the more important for Europeans to work together to ensure stability and good economic framework conditions. That is one of the most important tasks. Basic food supplies must be guaranteed and energy costs must remain within reasonable limits. We must strengthen production in Europe and at the same time keep trade routes open worldwide. We need good conditions for exports and imports. New trade agreements, especially with the world's democracies, are key to long-term economic security. The EU is on the right track when it comes to inflation. We must succeed in achieving the inflation target of two per cent in the long term.
one: Many commentators see Europe in a crisis in terms of both domestic and foreign policy. What continues to inspire you about Europe?
Manfred Weber: The question is, where would we be in this situation without cooperation in Europe? The EU has ensured peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity in Europe for 70 years. That is an invaluable asset. This Europe of today is the best Europe that has ever existed. I value Europe's diversity, its cohesion despite crises, the lifestyle that we as Europeans can enjoy. Europe is a community of destiny. Either we shape the future together. Then we will be strong. Or there will be no good future for the European states.
one: The last turnout in the European elections was just over 50%. Why should citizens go to the polls this time in particular?
Manfred Weber: Europe concerns everyone today. The days when the European elections were a protest election are over. On the one hand, there are the big questions: How do we secure peace and prosperity? How can we tackle the climate crisis? How can we ensure a good supply of food or energy? On the other hand, there are many everyday issues, such as cross-border regulations - keyword borderless travelling, living, studying or working in other EU countries, healthcare - or the single market, which everyone comes into contact with at the shop counter, for example. Voters will decide the future direction of Europe in the European elections. And we must work together to ensure that nothing is broken in our Europe. Unfortunately, there are too many radicals and nationalists who want to undermine and destroy Europe.
one: Which item should never be missing from your shopping basket?
Manfred Weber: I make sure I buy regional produce, fruit and vegetables. That's actually always in my shopping basket.
