Green candidate Terry Reintke
"For me, Europe means hope, prosperity and progress"

Terry Reintke is standing as the lead candidate for the Greens (European Green Party) in the 2024 European elections. She looks at trade-related issues, the European idea and gives us a glimpse into her shopping basket.

Terry Reintke, Co-President of the Greens/EFA Group

one: The past legislative period was characterised by unforeseeable shocks such as the pandemic and Russia's war against Ukraine. Inflation, strained supply chains and panic buying also posed major challenges for the retail sector. What are your party's priorities for the coming years in the food retail sector?
Terry Reintke
: Corona and the attack on Ukraine have highlighted the need to reduce risks in supply chains and access to raw materials. As Greens, we continue to advocate a forward-looking and open trade policy. This requires supporting European companies to diversify their investment activities and value chains and thus strengthen their resilience to external shocks. We are also committed to transparent food labelling that enables consumers to make informed choices. Reducing food waste is also a key part of our agenda.

one: Many rapporteurs see Europe as being in crisis in terms of domestic and foreign policy. What continues to inspire you about Europe?
Terry Reintke:
For me, Europe means hope, prosperity and progress. Whether at marches for press freedom in Hungary, Prides in Georgia and Serbia or the anti-legal demonstrations in Germany - European flags are flying everywhere. Only with Europe can we solve the problems of our time: together we can make our economy fit for a climate-neutral future, protect ourselves from autocrats like Putin and ensure that everyone lives with social security.

one: The last turnout in the European elections was just over 50%. Why should citizens go to the polls this time in particular?
Terry Reintke
: A European election is a direct opportunity to help shape the future of Europe. This election is crucial for many areas of our lives, from the climate-neutral modernisation of our industries to the protection of democracy from legal and authoritarian forces. If we look at the current polls, there is a danger that far-right parties will block forward-looking policies. It is therefore up to us to build a majority of democratic parties in parliament in order to really tackle the major challenges facing the economy, climate and democracy.

one: Which item should never be missing from your shopping basket?
Terry Reintke
: My great passion is potato crisps.
