Quinoa bites are "The tastiest idea in Germany"

The Latin American snack from el origen won over the test eaters in this year's "Germany's Tastiest Idea" competition. The winning product is now listed at REWE.

It's the big dream for everyone who develops new foods: A listing in the supermarket. For Gordon Prox from el origen in Hamburg, the dream came true in Vox's event show "Germany's Tastiest Idea", which was broadcast yesterday (22 August). The majority of the 100 test eaters confirmed that he had developed the tastiest idea: chocolate "crunchy chocolates" from direct and fair trade. This means that the Latin American superfood snack created by el origen is now on the shelves in all REWE stores nationwide. During the show, the Hamburg native beat nine other start-ups with his idea. For the first time, there was also an award for the most sustainable product within the show: this prize went to the start-up Knärzje from Frankfurt am Main. It claims to be the first sustainable zero waste organic beer in Germany.

During the three-hour show, two start-ups competed against each other in five categories based on the daily schedule: Breakfast, Lunchbreak, Snack, After Work and Party. That's why the first task was to impress in a direct duel. Moderated by Amiaz Habtu, the start-ups were introduced to viewers and test eaters in an emotional introductory film before their appearance.

In the head-to-head duel in the snacks category, el origen came out on top against Best Foodies, a healthy organic chickpea and potato cube snack for humans and dogs. How the test eaters rated each product was revealed on what was probably the longest checkout line in the world. In the final, el origen went up against the other four start-ups, each of which had won their category. This time, the food innovations were prepared as a dish for the new vote. In the end, el origen emerged from the final as the winner by a clear margin.

Gordon Prox is delighted: "This victory means a great deal to us. Our team spent two long years working with our local partners in Latin America on the perfect recipe for the quinoa bites. The fact that we are now the tastiest idea in Germany is a wonderful reward for our efforts."

Even before the final, Daniel Anthes from Knärzje in Frankfurt was delighted: his start-up received the award for the most sustainable product that was launched on the Vox show. The beer is brewed from surplus bread. Hence the name: in Hessian, "Knärzje" refers to the end of a loaf of bread. The award includes a listing in the REWE online shop and a comprehensive REWE media package. Sustainability was not a prerequisite for participation in the show, but was nevertheless to be rewarded. To this end, the independent testing institute Eaternity calculated a corresponding score for the innovations presented on the show.

However, it was not just the test eaters who gave their opinion on the new products, but also celebrity guests who were not allowed to vote: star chef Tim Mälzer, presenters Inka Bause and Jana Ina Zarella, comedian and restaurant owner Mirja Boes and REWE businesswoman and actress Ines Quermann.

"The show was a real surprise for me. As Managing Director of the "Supermarket of the Year", I've really seen a lot. But so much concentrated product innovation surprised even me. Luckily we had the test eaters - because I would hardly have been able to make up my mind," says Ines Quermann, summarising her impressions.
