In March, REWE Group officially committed to the "Science Based Targets Initiative" (SBTi) and thus made a company-wide decision in favour of climate protection. Our ambitious goal: We want to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 - as a Group with our tourism division and the Austrian sales lines.
At REWE Group, we want to make a measurable contribution to climate protection and are committed to comprehensive measures that effectively reduce our CO2 emissions. This is done in accordance with the science-based net-zero standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In the course of joining the SBTi, we have defined short and long-term company-wide reduction targets and measures that simultaneously promote innovative solutions along the entire supply chain.
The SBTi is an alliance of the partners CDP, United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It works with scientific institutions to develop climate targets that are in line with the requirements of the Paris Agreement.
Glass doors keep the cold inside the chiller cabinets and thus save energy.
But how can we manage to reduce our emissions in the long term? The glazing of refrigerated shelves, the use of climate-friendly refrigerants and lighting as well as green electricity and photovoltaics are important measures. They are also of particular importance for the implementation of the European Union's Green Deal and contribute to the company's cost efficiency.
REWE Group has been pursuing the "Green Building" concept in Germany since 2009, which is being continuously expanded. This and comprehensive energy efficiency measures have enabled us to significantly reduce energy consumption. Since the beginning of 2008, all electricity purchases for stores, warehouses and central buildings have been converted to 100 per cent certified green electricity from renewable sources such as wind energy, hydropower and photovoltaics.
We provide information on all measures to achieve our reduction targets in our 2023 progress report.

Climate protection without borders
We can only achieve our ambitious goals if we work together across the entire Group to protect the climate. REWE Group has also set out on the path to net-zero emissions in Austria. There, too, we are continuously investing in climate protection measures and innovative energy concepts, especially when expanding our stores.

Six out of ten BILLA and PENNY shops in Austria are already energy-efficient. In concrete terms, this means that 701 of the 1,232 BILLA shops are energy-efficient. At PENNY, 243 of 313 shops are operated with low emissions. Measures such as sustainable construction and the energy-efficient operation of our stores are key success factors.
