Old myths in a new light
by Edda Bauer

Even during his lifetime, Elvis Presley was an icon of pop culture and his life was considered a myth. In 1985, Priscilla Presley published her biography under the title "Elvis and Me". Sofia Coppola turned parts of it into an award-winning film in "Priscilla". In "Poor Things", director Yórgos Lánthimos breathes new life into the Frankenstein myth by having Emma Stone dance across the screen as a lively monster. After five seasons of "House of Money", Netflix is giving the highly successful Spanish bank robbery series a no less exciting prequel with "House of Money: Berlín".

Priscilla

© mubi Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu were considered one of the dream couples of the 20th century. However, Baz Luhrmann's 2022 epic "Elvis" hinted at the fact that not everything was so dreamlike in the life of the King of Rock'n'Roll. Based on the memoirs of Priscilla Presley, director Sofia Coppola now tells the story of what it felt like to be made into a bride in a golden cage at the age of 14. "Priscilla" actress Cailee Spaeny was honoured with the Coppa Volpi at the Venice Film Festival.

Sofia Coppola

Her mother was making a documentary film and her father was preparing to shoot "The Godfather" when Sofia Coppola was born in New York in 1971. She would have liked to become a designer or graphic artist or simply remain a model, but then in 1998 she discovered that you can combine everything in film production. From then on, everything happened quite quickly: a first respectable success with "The Virgin Suicide" in 1999, the original screenplay Oscar for "Lost in Translation" in 2003, the Golden Lion of Venice for "Somewhere" in 2010 and the directing prize in Cannes for "The Seduced" in 2017.

Poor Things

© Walt Disney Company In true Frankensteinian fashion, Dr Godwin "God" Baxter creates a daughter from the body of his dead wife and the brain of a foetus. Everything goes smoothly, but God is completely out of his depth when it comes to raising the life-hungry Bella. For director Yórgos Lánthimos, this is the starting signal to turn a coolly creepy black-and-white drama into a fiery, colourful panopticon of opulent sets and fleeting costumes with witty, profound dialogue from the mouths of outstanding actors. "Poor Things" won the Golden Lion in Venice in 2023.

Emma Stone

Without a plan B in her pocket, 15-year-old Emma Stone moved to Hollywood with her mother in 2003 to become an actress. For a long time, she was cast as the "sarcastic girlfriend of the protagonist" until she was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 2015 as the daughter of Michael Keaton in Birdman. in 2017, she won both trophies as the lead actress in the musical "La La Land". Since then, no female character has been too quirky for Stone, be it in Lánthimos' 2018 queen drama "The Favourite" or in the title role of the comedy "Cruella" (2021).

House of money: Berlín

netflix It was one of the first non-English-language series to enjoy international success via Netflix: the Spanish series "House of Money". Red overalls, white Dalí masks and, above all, the partisan song "Bella Ciao" made author and creator Álex Pina the trademark of his Robin Hood gang with Bonnie & Clyde appeal in 2017. The cool, but also heavily self-absorbed safecracker Berlín (Pedro Alonso) already had his own fan base from the first of five seasons. So it's no wonder that he deserves the spin-off, which is also a prequel and begins in Paris in true style - long before the banknote printers in Madrid realise what's in store for them.

Genre: Thriller
Length: 8 x approx. 50 minutes
Idea: Esther Martínez Lobato, Álex Pina
With: Pedro Alonso, Michelle Jenner, Tristán Ulloa, Itziar Ituño, Najwa Nimri

Gabriel Yoran: shortcuts to classical music

edda Bauer It all started quite innocently: in 2018, Gabriel Yoran, entrepreneur, author and son of two orchestral musicians, launched a series of articles about classical music on the online magazine "Krautreporter ". The mixture of simple words, unusual comparisons and direct examples on YouTube quickly found fans. It has since become a website in its own right, where Yoran regularly explains pieces of classical music that are so off the beaten track that they have earned the title "sneak peaks".
