Wilhelm Brandenburg in Timmendorfer Strand
New cooling centre saves 20 per cent electricity

Wilhelm Brandenburg is strengthening its Timmendorfer Strand site by investing around 4.5 million euros in a sustainable refrigeration system.

State-of-the-art technology makes it possible: the new refrigeration system reduces electricity consumption at the Wilhelm Brandenburg site in Timmendorfer Strand by around 20 per cent. In purely mathematical terms, the annual saving of 2,300 megawatt hours is enough to supply 600 single-family homes with electricity for twelve months.

Exclusively green electricity

Like all our companies, Wilhelm Brandenburg has been using only certified green electricity since 2008. The energy-efficient technology also makes it possible to halve the total amount of ammonia used for refrigeration, reduce noise sources and significantly increase operational safety and accident prevention. In short: important steps on the way to greater Sustainability.

In addition to the aspect of Sustainability, Wilhelm Brandenburg is an important element with regard to in-house meat and sausage production. Hans-Jürgen Moog, the REWE Group Management Board member responsible for Purchasing and Goods, emphasised: "Wilhelm Brandenburg plays a central role in our verticalisation strategy. Especially in recent years, which have been characterised by tight supply chains, we have been able to make an important contribution to a stable supply of goods through our own production. With this forward-looking investment in the site, we are securing its performance for years to come."

"Timmendorfer Strand plays an important role in the interplay between our six production sites. Around 500 employees produce a varied range of sausages and hams as well as stews and soups for REWE and PENNY stores here. Our original Rügenwalder Teewurst sausage in particular is famous throughout Germany. By renewing the refrigeration technology, we are setting an example for climate protection at the site and making a long-term commitment to Timmendorfer Strand," adds Julian Hertzig, managing director of Wilhelm Brandenburg. Construction of the new, sustainable refrigeration centre began in March 2022. "In addition to the significantly lower electricity consumption, we were able to significantly increase operational and environmental safety once again," says Hertzig.

On the road to climate neutrality

State Secretary Julia Carstens emphasises: "The investment in the plant in Timmendorfer Strand is a clear commitment to Schleswig-Holstein as a business location, and I am naturally very pleased about that. Many companies have other things on their minds than the next major investment. Wilhelm Brandenburg shows that there is another way. In doing so, the company is making an important contribution to securing the labour force, strengthening the local economy and achieving the major goal of climate neutrality. On the way to becoming a climate-neutral industrialised country, we need companies like this at our side, pulling together with us."

The REWE Group's commitment is also expressly welcomed locally. "The municipality of Timmendorfer Strand is very pleased that the location will continue to be used in the future and that jobs will be retained. The immense electricity savings from the new sustainable refrigeration centre are particularly noteworthy," says Mayor Sven Partheil-Böhnke with delight
