20 couples said "I do" on 22 February 2022. Not at the registry office or church, however, but at the PENNY store in Berlin-Wedding, for 22.22 euros. An Elvis impersonator gave the wedding speech in proper style. Afterwards, a gift basket awaited those who were getting married. One lucky couple even won a trip to Las Vegas.
The cheapest weddings last the longest, "Elvis" quoted a study, which should only have encouraged the 22 couples present. For 22.22 euros, the bride and groom received the full wedding programme, including a subsequent feast at the cult curry sausage stall Curry36. Although the lovers only said "I do" symbolically, it was clear to see that it was about true love.
No Las Wedding without an Elvis impersonator
The participants included 23-year-old Raphaela and 29-year-old Anish. They both have a very special love story: "We met for the first time in front of the flour shelf at PENNY," they say. They were both looking for flour for a pizza, got talking and so the first date was set: baking pizza. After three years, the crazy wedding in the PENNY Wedding Chapel was "the perfect next step in our relationship".
Monique (28) and Ralf (51) also thought they should go to PENNY first. They had been planning their wedding for years, but something always got in the way. Now they wanted to change that. Ralf, who is a travesty artist, feels very close to PENNY. "Through the campaign with Olivia Jones, we got to know PENNY as a very open market," enthuse the newlyweds. Their heroine Jones would certainly be proud of them: They came to Las Wedding dressed all in pink for their wedding ceremony.
"We have been successfully positioning ourselves as the discounter in the neighbourhood for years. But we also keep drawing attention to ourselves with unusual promotions and markets. Now, when it comes to getting married, it's time to go to PENNY," said Marcus Haus, Head of Marketing at PENNY, about the weddings in Wedding. "Weddings are really difficult to organise at the moment and a market called "Wedding" was simply a great opportunity for us," said Christoph Everke, Creative Director of Serviceplan Campaign.
A shrill yes: Ralf and Monique
Over 400 couples had applied for the campaign, 20 of whom were ultimately awarded the trip to Berlin. The couples were picked up from their hotel by shuttle on the morning of Tuesday 22 February and taken to the PENNY shop on Prinzenallee in Wedding. Once there, they said "I do" and danced past the checkouts, where they quickly signed their vows on a receipt.
