Four million fans watched the "PENNY DEL Grill Championship" last year. The format has now entered its second season and is being expanded even further.
They're pros on the ice, but how well do the ice hockey teams do on the barbecue? The first duels of the second "PENNY DEL Grill Championship" have already been decided and the reigning ice hockey champions Eisbären Berlin suffered a defeat, as did the reigning grill champions Kölner Haie. Revenge will probably follow on the ice.
So it's back to slicing, sizzling and grilling, and the first few weeks have already shown that viewers are enjoying the entertaining format: Viewership of the first two episodes has already doubled compared to the previous year. PENNY is thus successfully activating its ice hockey commitment during the summer break and thus remains present between seasons.
Barbecue championship: who will win the trophy this season?
Two players from each of the 14 PENNY DEL clubs duel in a direct comparison at the barbecue. What goes on the barbecue is decided by the fans, who were able to vote online for 28 recipes. All episodes are available at penny.de/eishockey - a new episode is published every week. The pros were delighted with the campaign. "It was a lot of fun and the location was really cool. And when you also saw what was going on around the set, it was an extraordinary experience," says national team player Daniel Fischbuch (Düsseldorfer EG).
There are eight episodes in total: seven duels and the winner's announcement, each around twelve minutes long, plus a three-minute highlight clip.
Since the 2020/2021 season, PENNY has been the title partner of the German Ice Hockey League, which has since been called the PENNY DEL. At the same time, PENNY became a Premium Partner of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB), which includes legal rights to both the German men's and women's national teams.
Since spring 2021, further partnerships have been concluded with "Para-Eishockey" and the "Förderverein Deutsche Eishockey Nachwuchs".
