retailers are proactive. They are single-handedly trialling concepts that push the limits of the state-specific laws on shop opening hours. Since 15 January, nahkauf Berszinski in Zierenberg, for example, has been offering local supply around the clock for a section of its store.
In the national REWE Group cosmos, there are currently three ways to shop without limited opening hours: unstaffed walk-in stores such as the nahkauf boxes, Lekkerland's smart store solutions or REWE stores in special sales zones such as railway stations and airports. In addition, nahkauf retailers are proactive. They are single-handedly trialling concepts that push the limits of country-specific laws on shop opening hours. From 15 January, for example, nahkauf Berszinski in Zierenberg will be offering local supply around the clock for a section of its store. Davide Spiga, on the other hand, has now tested opening his nahkauf on Bieberer Straße in Offenbach 24 hours a day, six days a week and with staff for an unlimited period.
A 120 square metre 24/7 area has been set up in the 500 square metre Berszinski store, which was extensively renovated and modernised in October 2025. This is accessible after regular opening hours (Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.) as well as on Sundays and public holidays. Customers can find a basic range of around 2,000 everyday items there, including fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, dairy products and frozen goods. This makes the store a pioneer in the region, combining the traditional supermarket with an innovative round-the-clock concept.

Personnel-free and cashless
Access is staff-free and cashless: There is no staff on site after closing time, access and payment are made by debit or credit card. Customers scan their card at the entrance, select the products they want, scan them at the payment terminal and complete their purchase without cash. The concept is similar to the familiar nahkauf boxes, but goes one step further by being integrated into an existing supermarket.

The Berszinski family has once again shown itself to be innovative and keen to experiment with new concepts for local shopping. Some time ago, businessman Jörn Berszinski operated the REWE shopping bus, which was intended to secure local supplies in several communities in northern Hesse. With the new pilot project, the family is once again setting an example for flexibility and customer proximity.
Flexible shopping
"We want to offer our customers maximum flexibility and make local shopping in Zierenberg fit for the future," explains Jörn Berszinski, operator of the store. "With this pilot project, we are setting an example for innovation and customer-orientation."
The Berszinski family has been active in Zierenberg for 24 years and currently employs ten people who ensure that the 24/7 area is always well stocked during regular opening hours.

Full range of products even at night
Hesse's first supermarket to be open all night is the nahkauf YUNIQ run by merchant Davide Spiga on Offenbach's Marktplatz. Since 20 October 2025, it has been offering a full range of products in 24-hour operation - 12,000 items on 360 square metres of sales space. Warm, inviting lighting and stylish lamps, original wall design and creative product range signs create a pleasant shopping atmosphere. Spiga: "Not a purely functional shop, but a place where people like to spend time and shop." The areas are divided into themed worlds - from the "Baking, Gastronomy & Convenience World" to the "Milky Way" and "Ice Age".
Surcharges for employees
Store employees and security are on site around the clock. With 150 to 250 customers per night and predominantly regular shoppers, Spiga sees this as confirmation: "Offenbach is a city that is also alive at night. The concept works at this location. I also want to show that local shopping is not only practical, but also modern. Offenbach will thus become a pilot location for a supermarket of the future." The test, which was initially limited to four weeks, was so successful that the retailer is now continuing the round-the-clock opening on a permanent basis. The retailer, which operates seven REWE and nahkauf stores together, counters critics of the 24/7 concept with staff: "We are making the working hours more flexible - and there are definitely employees who are happy to work at night, especially because of the bonuses. So it's important to find the right structure in the store." Important: Despite round-the-clock opening hours, the supermarket is closed on Sundays.
