Better service for customers
toom Baumarkt DIY store and fulfilment tools lay the foundations for flexible omnichannel services
by Johanna Freimuth

At the heart of the collaboration between the two REWE Group companies, toom and fulfillmenttools, lies the introduction of the Agentic Order Management System, which will further improve both customer satisfaction and the cost-effectiveness of online orders.

Whether it’s checking a product’s availability online, collecting items from the store, or, in future, having them delivered directly from their nearest toom Baumarkt DIY store – customers today expect flexible shopping options that fit seamlessly into their everyday lives. Particularly when it comes to project-based purchases at DIY stores, transparency regarding stock availability is crucial so that customers know, before visiting the store, that the products they need are in stock.

To continuously improve this shopping experience, toom Baumarkt DIY store and fulfillmenttools are combining their retail and technological expertise. Together, they are laying the foundations for improved stock availability across all locations and channels, transparent delivery charges, and future delivery models such as ‘ship-from-store’, where online orders can be dispatched directly from the stores.

The two companies will demonstrate how retail and technology expertise work together within the REWE Group on 30 September 2026 at RETAIL NXT in Bad Vilbel, near Frankfurt am Main. In a joint masterclass, Cordula Mehler, Head of Omnichannel Commerce & Digital Services at toom Baumarkt DIY store, and Mark Byerly, Head of Customer Success at fulfillmenttools, will explain how toom is progressively developing its omnichannel services and laying the foundations for future delivery and service offerings with a modern order management platform. The focus is not only on more efficient processes, but above all on a more convenient, flexible and customer-centric shopping experience: from reliable stock availability information and collection to the fastest possible and most cost-effective delivery.

From rigid dispatch rules to a scalable fulfilment framework

The partnership is also set to optimise the functionality of in-store collection orders at toom Baumarkt DIY store. This further enhances both customer satisfaction and the cost-effectiveness of Click & Deliver orders. The aim is to manage Click & Deliver orders efficiently across various delivery channels whilst making optimal use of existing fulfilment capacities.

Fulfillment centres are used for this purpose, with plans to also utilise stores and connected dropshipping partners in the future. This is an important step towards delivering on the customer promise reliably and cost-effectively. It enables delivery times to be reduced, stock availability to be increased and orders to be processed more flexibly. At the same time, existing resources within the retail and logistics network are utilised more efficiently. The focus is on providing customers with the best possible support in carrying out their plans – regardless of whether they are shopping in-store, reserving items, collecting goods or having them delivered to their home.

„With fulfilmenttools, we have a partner by our side who provides the technological support for our omnichannel strategy and understands our retail needs.“ Cordula Mehler, Head of Omnichannel Commerce & Digital Services, toom Baumarkt DIY store

“With fulfillmenttools, we have a partner at our side who provides the technological support for our omnichannel strategy and understands our retail requirements. The new order management structure lays the foundations for making our existing services more efficient and gradually expanding them to include further fulfilment models such as ‘ship-from-store’. In this way, we are laying the groundwork for an even more flexible and customer-focused shopping experience,” says Cordula Mehler, Head of Omnichannel Commerce & Digital Services at toom Baumarkt DIY store.

Mark Byerly, Head of Customer Success at fulfillmenttools, also emphasises that technological advancement and practical implementation can go hand in hand: “The project with toom demonstrates how retailers can use a modern order management platform to digitise existing processes whilst simultaneously laying the foundations for future omnichannel models. We are particularly pleased to be implementing this project together with a company within the REWE Group. As a spin-off of REWE digital, we have first-hand knowledge of the retail sector’s requirements. This makes it all the more rewarding to support toom, a partner from the ‘REWE Group family’, in future-proofing its fulfilment processes.”

The collaboration between toom and fulfillmenttools marks an important step in the further development of toom’s omnichannel strategy. fulfillmenttools’ Agentic Order Management System digitises the existing ‘Click & Reserve’ and ‘Click & Deliver’ processes and lays the groundwork for efficiently integrating further fulfilment and dispatch models, such as ‘Ship-from-Store’. By combining retail expertise with technological innovation, the conditions are being created for new service offerings and an even more flexible shopping experience for customers.

A brief explanation: An overview of the key terms

  • Ship-from-Store: Online orders are dispatched directly from a shop rather than exclusively from a central warehouse.
  • Click & Reserve: Customers reserve an item online and pay for it when they collect it from the shop.
  • Click & Deliver: Customers order and pay for an item online and then have it conveniently delivered to their home.
  • Agentic Order Management System (Agentic OMS): An intelligent order management system that uses AI to make decisions autonomously, such as selecting the best dispatch location, monitoring stock levels and automatically optimising orders. Project scope

At a glance, the collaboration currently comprises:

  • Implementation of an Agentic Order Management system with cross-channel stock visibility as the foundation for toom’s collection and dispatch processes; ‘Ship-from-Store’ is set to follow in the future.
  • Optimisation of delivery costs for Click & Deliver from toom’s
  • fulfilment centres (FFC) and distribution centres (DS) to fulfil the customer promise cost-effectively.
  • An initial roll-out at one site (FFCs and DSs are treated in the same way), with a planned pilot phase for expansion to a few further sites
