BILLA is further expanding a measure against food waste: Since 26 September, Too Good To Go "surprise boxes" have been available in all 1,300 BILLA and BILLA PLUS stores throughout Austria.
Together we achieve more than alone. That's why BILLA has been working with Too Good To Go since 2021. The company has set itself the task of giving leftover food a second chance with its 1.3 million registered users. At 90 locations in Vienna and Lower Austria, customers have been able to use the Too Good To Go app at BILLA and BILLA PLUS to reserve, pay for and collect "surprise boxes" filled with food during a set time window. The cooperation has now been extended to all 1,300 BILLA and BILLA PLUS locations in Austria.
"As a food retailer, it is our duty to use the resources available to us responsibly and, above all, sustainably. This is why we have been implementing a range of targeted measures for years to minimise food waste in our stores. The expansion of our cooperation with Too Good To Go is another important step and complements our previous commitment," explains Harald Mießner, BILLA Management Board member responsible for the sales department.

A "box" full of surprises
What the boxes are filled with is a surprise. They mainly contain fruit and vegetables, baked goods, products from the dry goods range, milk and dairy products as well as individual specialities. Vegetarian and purely plant-based products can also be included. The cost per box is €4.99, which is a third of the original value of the goods.
"Food waste is one of the biggest problems of our time, but it is also an important opportunity in the climate crisis. I am very pleased that BILLA is seizing this opportunity and not only saving food in all stores with us at Too Good To Go, but also coming closer to the goal of zero food waste in supermarkets with many other initiatives," says Georg Strasser, Country Manager of Too Good To Go Austria.
