Milestone reached
2.000 REWE pick-up services in Germany
by Frauke Weber

An important milestone for e-commerce at REWE: the opening of the 2,000th pick-up service marks another step towards nationwide coverage throughout Germany. Customers now have the choice of shopping in-store or conveniently ordering online and picking up the goods at the store at the desired time: a flexible shopping experience that saves time and makes everyday life easier.

Sahra Cengiz The 2,000th location was opened in June in the newly opened REWE store run by shop assistant Sahra Cengiz in Dormagen (North Rhine-Westphalia). From the outset, it was important to her to offer modern services such as the pick-up service. This is because she believes that the offer meets the needs of her customers to shop as flexibly as possible. And, of course, it also hopes to attract new customers who need a flexible and time-saving way to shop on their way home from work, for example. Two reserved car parks directly in front of the entrance to her store also help to save time. A clearly visible pick-up counter also ensures an uncomplicated customer experience.

REWE pioneered the pick-up service in 2011 and opened the first locations in three REWE stores in the Rhine-Main region. The first of these - in Frankfurt/Nieder-Erlenbach - is still in operation today. Since then, the service has been continuously developed - together with local REWE retailers, among others. Today, more than half of the approximately 3,800 REWE stores offer this service.

„The pick-up service not only ensures greater customer satisfaction, but also opens up new target groups. Almost one in five users is a new customer“
Clemens Bauer, Director REWE E-Commerce

"The pick-up service not only ensures greater customer satisfaction, but also opens up new target groups. Almost one in five users is a new customer," explains Clemens Bauer, Director REWE E-Commerce. "Families in particular make intensive use of the pick-up service, saving between one and two hours per shopping trip. This time saving ensures a high level of loyalty and more time for the really important things in life.

The continuously increasing customer interest is also reflected in the figures:

Following continued strong growth, most recently at over 20 per cent annually, REWE expects around six million orders to be placed via the pick-up service by 2025.

And the expansion continues: together with REWE retailers, the service is being further promoted throughout Germany in order to offer even more people a modern, convenient and flexible shopping experience. In addition, the REWE delivery service now covers more than 90 cities; together, the pick-up and delivery services reach around 90 per cent of households in Germany.
