1.500 pick-up services on the network

REWE has opened its 1,500th pick-up service in Kall, underlining its market leadership in online grocery shopping.

No one in the German food retail sector has more: a few days ago, REWE opened its 1,500th pick-up service in the small Eifel town of Kall, making it the clear market leader in Germany for online grocery shopping. The symbolic anniversary pick-up service is located in Anna Pauly's REWE Centre, which has been freshly renovated months after the flood of the century and is also relaunching this practical service. Divisional Director Peter Maly congratulated the opening on site. All other REWE pick-up services from Flensburg on the Baltic Sea to Waging am See in Bavaria, from Vetschau in the Spreewald to Kranenburg on the Dutch border also celebrated virtually with an anniversary video. REWE is thus expanding its market leadership in online ordering of full supermarket ranges. For around ten years, customers have appreciated the combination of online and offline offerings, for example through the REWE delivery service and the REWE pick-up service.

"When we set up the first three REWE stores with a pick-up service in the Rhine-Main region in spring 2011, we were pioneers in the industry in this respect. The fact that we are now opening our 1,500th store shows our strength in recognising and meeting customer needs early on. Since then, we have successively expanded our online food ordering services and consolidated our leading position in the highly competitive market," said Peter Maly at the presentation of a "1,500 x REWE pick-up service" sign to Anna Pauly from the REWE Centre. "Outstanding reconstruction work has also been done here in the Kall store to remedy the devastating consequences of the flood and to become the national local supplier it was before. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone involved."

Anna Pauly and her team were delighted to receive the many congratulations and well-wishes: "We have all been eagerly awaiting this opening. We are delighted by the personal moments and the warm encouragement. The fact that we are also launching our 1,500th pick-up service at the same time is great, especially for our customers - it means we have a full range of services right from the opening and have linked online and store."

1.500 pick-ups possible on the same day

And it's that simple (not just in Kall): At www.rewe.de/shop or in the app, customers enter the desired postcode - in Kall "53925" - and select the "Pick-up service" and the store. They can then put together their own personalised shopping basket. They can choose from several thousand items online, including frozen products, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and sausage products, dairy products, dry goods and drinks. There is no minimum order value, only a service fee of two euros is charged when ordering. The fee is waived for new customers on their first order. When shopping online, customers can choose which of the two-hour time slots suits them best. And if you are in a particular hurry, you can pick up your order on the same day: Customers can pick up their purchases just three hours after placing their order. Collection is quick: customers park in exclusive car parks next to the separate collection service entrance. The store staff hand over the purchase, which can be paid for directly at a separate checkout. The payment methods are the same as in the store: cash and by debit or credit card. Payback points can also be collected and cash withdrawn.

A nationwide model for success

The regional distribution of pick-up services in Germany is balanced: There are 260 pick-up options at the market in the south, 240 each in the north, east and west, 215 in the south-west, 185 in the centre and 120 pick-up services in the Ruhr region (all figures rounded).

Typically, it is mainly everyday products that end up in the shopping basket as weekly purchases: 35% fresh & chilled products, 25% dry goods, 15% fruit & vegetables, 10% frozen food and drinks. Added to this are 5% drinks, 5% wine, spirits and tobacco and 5% kitchen & household, drugstore and cosmetics (all figures rounded). Bananas, cucumbers and milk are particularly popular products.

At around ten pick-up stations (Cologne and Berlin), three pick-up points (Hamburg) and with concepts for mobile pick-up and pick-up options at warehouse locations, REWE is developing new formats and testing new ways to order groceries online and pick them up yourself. "The pick-up service is a successful offering and is very popular with customers. We want to build on this success and continue to explore innovative ways to make weekly shopping as convenient and quick as possible," says Drasko Lazovic, Director of REWE Delivery and Pick-up Service.
