REWE Group receives IÖW award

REWE Group is one of the major German companies that informs the public most transparently about its social and ecological activities. This is once again confirmed by an analysis of current sustainability reports from the 100 largest German companies.

The Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) and the Future Business Association, in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, yesterday (31 March) awarded prizes to pioneering companies in the field of transparent sustainability reporting: REWE Group achieved second place in the large companies category with its current online sustainability report as the best retailer. The IÖW and Future regularly assess the transparency of the 100 largest German companies in an independent, cross-industry ranking.

Nicola Tanaskovic, Head of Corporate Responsibility at REWE Group: "Around 15 years ago, we set out to become an increasingly sustainable company out of conviction and responsibility. That's why we know: Doing business - and living - more sustainably is an ongoing process with ever new challenges. And the last two years in particular have shown us how quickly supposed certainties can be lost. We are delighted that the jury has honoured the documentation of our path with a top place for the second time - and see this as an incentive not to let up in our commitment."

REWE Group convinces with transparency

Dr Christian Lautermann, project manager of the sustainability report ranking and head of the research field Corporate Governance and Consumption at the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW), on REWE Group's sustainability report: "In its sustainability report, REWE Group provides comprehensive information on the social and ecological aspects of its product portfolio and supply chains. It makes transparent which specific guidelines it follows and how it uses risk analyses and score cards to improve the social and ecological balance of selected products and raw materials. The retail company also explains how it works with industry initiatives to develop its suppliers and is committed to ensuring a living income in the supply chain. REWE Group is also convincing when it comes to stakeholder involvement. For example, it presents the views of its own 'Sustainability Advisory Board' on relevant topics."

In the ranking of sustainability reports, the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) and the Future Business Association are evaluating the reports of large and medium-sized companies for the eleventh time. The ranking is one of the world's first criteria-based assessments of reports in which companies present their ecological and social activities and achievements on a voluntary basis.

With the Sustainability Report, REWE Group has been documenting its sustainable commitment in the four pillars of its sustainability strategy since 2008: "Green Products", "Energy, Climate and Environment", "Employees" and "Social Commitment".

Since 2018, the sustainability report has been published annually in purely digital form. In 2019, REWE Group achieved first place in the IÖW ranking for its online sustainability report in its tenth year of reporting. All information at: www.rewe-group-nachhaltigkeitsbericht.de/2020/
