Switch to reusable bags
REWE delivery service saves 40 million paper bags

The REWE delivery service is now using reusable bags to deliver its products. Having already been tested in some model regions, they are now being rolled out nationwide.

Thanks to the changeover, the REWE delivery service saves 40 million paper bags a year. Customers order as usual from the REWE delivery service and automatically receive their purchases in the robust deposit bags. A 50 cent deposit is charged per bag and the bags can be returned with the next order.

The reusable bag is one of several measures REWE Lieferservice is taking to become even more sustainable. In order to determine the sustainability potential and optimisation possibilities of the bags, their life cycle was analysed by an independent institute. The results show that the reusable bag system offers significant advantages over the paper bag system: According to the analyses, it can save 62 per cent water. In addition, theCO2 balance improves continuously with each use. REWE is therefore appealing to customers to reuse the reusable bag. Following a successful test phase, these are now to be used in all 16 REWE delivery service warehouses, the "Food Fulfillment Centres".

"We are questioning ourselves and want to continuously develop," explains Clemens Bauer, management of REWE E-Commerce, "to this end, we are working on new ideas on how we can further improve our offering in favour of consumers and the environment."
