Stefan Magel, Divisional Director of REWE Group/ COO PENNY from 2016 to 2022, passed away on Friday (12 September) after a long and serious battle with cancer, which he fought so courageously and bravely. In addition to great sadness and bewilderment as well as deep sympathy for the family, REWE Group and PENNY above all have great respect for the life's work of the top manager. During the "Magel era", important decisions were made that set the course for PENNY's current success. Stefan Magel has shaped the discounter as a senior manager, visionary and moderniser in equal measure.
At the age of 59, Stefan Magel had decided to leave REWE Group in 2022 after more than 13 years of service and very successful work for toom and PENNY.
Lionel Souque, CEO of the REWE Group, on the death of Stefan Magel: "The news deeply saddens me and the entire Management Board and Supervisory Board of the REWE Group. Stefan Magel was a top manager with a very good instinct for PENNY and the industry. Thanks to his comprehensive expertise, we were able to return to the road to success with PENNY. As a person and personality, he was also an important pillar for our company, the employees and the management team, where he was very popular with his approachability. In this success and in countless incidents, his legacy lives on in the REWE Group and at PENNY. We will miss him. We all pay tribute to his life's work and our thoughts are with his family and all those who knew Stefan Magel."
