Our trainees
"Diverse, exciting, practical"

Trainees from REWE, PENNY, toom, DERTOUR Group, BILLA, BIPA, Lekkerland, REWE digital and the head office were asked to describe their training in three words. Also in the film: the most important tips from experienced trainees to new trainees.

The new training year is just around the corner and the prospective trainees are applying with their half-year reports, which - depending on the federal state - are issued at the end of January or beginning of February. So it's time to take a look at our wide range of training opportunities.

One of the largest training companies

At REWE Group, thousands of young people start their careers every year with an apprenticeship or dual study programme. With well over 10,000 trainees, we are one of the largest training companies in Germany.

Since 2018, the number of our trainees in Germany has steadily increased. Despite various crises, we have cracked the 10,000 mark. From 8,560 in 2018, the number of our trainees has risen to 10,588 in 2024 - an increase of well over 20 per cent. This makes us one of the largest and most diverse training companies in the whole of Germany.the large number of trainees helps us to close the skills gap and thus remain competitive in the future.

From confectioner to digitalisation management assistant

We are hiring thousands of apprentices again this year - and not just in traditional retail professions such as retail clerk, but also as a digitalisation management clerk at REWE digital, in logistics as a professional driver or as a tourism clerk at DERTOUR Group. BILLA also offers training as a pastry chef in Austria.

Jacqueline Adams was almost 50 years old when she began her partial qualification as a trained sales assistant at REWE in May 2023. The registered nurse had already experienced a lot in her professional life - including in retail. Doing another apprenticeship now? Go to school? Study? The Berliner hesitated briefly. 13 colleagues have started their careers at PENNY Süd. We attended the launch of the partial qualification programme in Munich and spoke to candidates, store managers and political supporters about the benefits of the project.

Best ambassadors in the industry
The trade magazine "Lebensmittelpraxis" has honoured the service counter in the Nezlow family's REWE store in Waging with the "Meat Star 2025" award. REWE even won twice in the competition for the best young talent in the industry.

"We also have to turn a blind eye when things don't go well straight away"
Stefan Fiévet, who is responsible for the recruiting team in the northern region, sees himself as a bridge builder: between job centres, local training providers, REWE Group stores and participants in the partial qualification programme. And he also has ideas on how to make the integration of new employees even more successful.

"A stroke of luck for my market"
When it comes to finding employees for his store, REWE salesman Tim-Marlo Kaiser faces a particular challenge at the Wolfsburg site: he has to compete with Volkswagen. The car manufacturer is a sought-after employer in the region. In order to find reinforcements for his team, Kaiser decided to take a new approach to recruiting. As part of the partial qualification project, he hired Azuka Philip Ndihika, a trained banker from Nigeria, in June 2021. Today, the 49-year-old manages the store's fruit and vegetable department with two employees.

"Participants see the project as an opportunity"
Steven Köhler has been working at Marius Gläß's store for around a year. Steven Köhler has no training qualifications and was unemployed for around six years. REWE store manager Gläß supports the partial qualification project not only because he believes that people who do not have a straight CV deserve a second chance.
