Credit rating agency S&P: REWE Group is well positioned in the European food retail sector
by Johanna Freimuth

The REWE Group remains in a strong financial position in 2026. The international rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) has once again confirmed our credit rating as ‘BBB’ with a stable outlook. S&P thus attests to the RWE Group’s continued solid financial and earnings position, as well as its high creditworthiness.

The rating agency views the REWE Group’s diversified business model, its strong market position in the European food retail sector and its long-term financial and investment strategy in a particularly positive light. The Group’s broad presence across various business segments and countries is also highlighted as an important factor contributing to its stability.

Strong market positions and a broad portfolio

S&P considers the REWE Group to be well positioned in the European food retail sector. The rating agency highlights in particular the Group’s strong market position in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, its diversified portfolio and its high brand awareness. Furthermore, the REWE Group’s extensive network of stores, attractive locations and high level of purchasing expertise contribute to its strong competitive position.

Another key aspect of the assessment is the REWE Group’s consistent investment strategy. The group continuously invests in the modernisation and further development of its sites, as well as in logistics structures and automation. In doing so, it lays the foundations for long-term growth and sustainability in value creation.

First co-operative with an internationally recognised rating

The reaffirmation of the rating is also a sign of confidence in the REWE Group’s economic strength and long-term viability. Standard & Poor’s has been rating the Group since 2010. At the time, it was the first co-operatively organised company in Germany to receive an internationally recognised rating. Since then, the REWE Group has consistently maintained an investment-grade rating, thereby confirming its role as a financially reliable and forward-looking group of companies.

“The reaffirmation of our BBB rating with a stable outlook is an important indicator of the REWE Group’s financial stability and long-term viability. It confirms the strength of our business model, our leading market positions and our consistent investment strategy. Particularly in a challenging economic environment, this rating demonstrates confidence in our trajectory of sustainable growth and our financial strength.”
